Considering The Risks And Disadvantages Of Quick Weight Loss Programs

by Ben Pate

If you are hoping to lose weight for an upcoming event, it can be tempting to try and do so as quickly as possible. However, there are things that you need to know about fast weight loss and why it may not be the best solution for your needs. Finding out what the dangers are, what a safe rate of weight loss is and how to accomplish it are all valuable tools that you can use to take pounds off and keep them off without hurting your health in the process.

You may wonder why some people seem to be naturally slender and have lower body weights than others. A lot of this has to do with our metabolism. Some have efficient metabolisms that can consume a lot of the calories from the food they eat. Others have inefficient or slow metabolisms. This means that the calories in the food they eat are often converted into fat. If we eat a lot of excess calories, we end up storing a lot of it as fat and can end up gaining weight that we do not want.

Although it may seem possible at first glance to simply reduce body weight by cutting back severely on the amount of calories that they consume, the fact is that there are a number of drawbacks to this method. Trying to drop weight by starving your body is actually the worst way you can go about dropping weight in a hurry. Here are some of the main reasons why this is the case.

Our bodies are designed to tell when we are starving. This was a protection method that dates back to when food was not always readily available. During the times when we were short on food, our bodies would hold on to all of the calories that we were able to take in. Our metabolic rate would slow down. Even now, when we starve ourselves, we suddenly become unable to shed body fat since our body is holding on to it as a way to stay alive.

In fact, although we may be continuing to shed pounds, it is not weight from fat that we are dropping. Water is usually the first thing that we lose, especially if we are using fat burning pills or diuretics to do so. We can become weak and dehydrated which, if we are not careful, can actually be fatal. Then, when we stop taking pills or start eating normally again, we simply gain the weight back as we replace the water in our system.

Other affects you may experience are a drop in your energy level and health problems due to restricted vitamin and mineral intake. You can lower your energy levels and if you stay on a severe diet for too long, you may end up lowering your metabolic rate permanently and causing significant, long term health problems.

If you do want to stay healthy and not damage your metabolic rate or your health, you need to aim for a loss of two pounds a week. Reducing caloric intake and increasing the amount of exercise you do will help you achieve this. As a result, you can stay as healthy as possible and not need to worry about gaining it back right away.

Everyone would love to achieve weight loss tips but the fact is that it often is not possible without risking your health. By starting sooner rather than later, you can start fat loss at a rate that will not leave you weak or short on the vitamins and minerals that you need to stay healthy.
