At-home Tips for Dry Skin

by Barbara Ann Laroche

There isn't a person on earth that doesn't hate when their skin doesn't look the way they'd like it to. One of the most common conditions that affect our skin is to have dry skin. There are many factors that can cause dryness, such as cold weather, bathing excessively with harsh soaps, using cosmetic products that are not good for our skin, too much sun or wind exposure, or medical conditions such as dermatitis. Dry skin is characterized by having a low level of sebum and not being able to retain moisture and if no products are used to moisturize it, it feels tight and rough. There are many home made remedies that help relieve dry skin and we will look into a couple of them

One of the things that you can do is to apply essential oils on your skin. Lavender oil, rose hip oil, chamomile and sandalwood oil are some of the ones that can be applied for dry skin. For example, rose hip oil is very rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, and both are very good for the skin. Another use for it is to reduce photo aging and scarring.

Drinking plenty of water is a basic. If you do not do this, you can apply all the oils you can find and you will never get definite results. Another idea is to take a bath and mix the water with a cup of baking soda, or make the following ingredients: Blend 1 cup of warm water, 1 cup of oatmeal, 1/2 a cup of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Pour this paste under the water that runs to fill the tub. You will experience the softness after it.

Other Options to Fight Dry Skin

Making a cucumber paste also helps. You have to leave the mix on for 10 minutes after you apply it and before you rinse it off. Repeating this procedure a couple of times during the week will lead you to excellent results. There is also another idea that you can put to use: apply a mix of 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise mixed with one tablespoon of baby oil or apply a thick layer of Vaseline on your skin. In both procedures you have to leave the mixtures on your skin for 20 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

If you feel that your skin is not as dry as to have to follow these home made treatments, here are some tips for you: drink plenty of water, like we mentioned before, avoid very hot water when you shower because it dries your skin, when you will be exposed to the sun, make sure you use a good sun block to protect your skin. Additionally, use a dry skin balm or any other hydrating lotion.

Dry skin is a problem that affects many people all over the world. If this is not taken care of, it can lead to conditions such as eczema.
