Ugly Cellulite and What to do About it

by Abigail McKenzee

Cellulite is the expression used to describe pockets of fat which are trapped and cause dimpling in the skin. This dimpling is irregular and patchy and has been identified with orange peel.

About 90% of post adolescent women develop cellulite at some time during their lives and it is seen in a few men. The thighs, buttocks and the abdomen are the usual locations for a woman to develop cellulite. It can often be mistaken for obesity related, but cellulite can affect slim women too.

There are three specific layers of fat underneath the skin layers. Cellulite usually develops in the subcutaneous fat layers. The structure of this layer of fat is unique as its fatty parts are structured into specific chambers by strands of linked tissue around it.

Hormones also play a role in the fat storage with the bodys metabolism in the subcutaneous fat layer. Hormonal factors such as estrogen and folliculine also play a role in cellulite formation. It is usually found in women during large hormonal changes like such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause and also whilst taking birth control pills.

A person's genetic makeup predicts their fat storage and metabolism in their fat layers which are predisposed by diet, exercise and lifestyle.

Most fat layers have no role in cellulite forming on a person's body and its formation is a result of complex physiological changes that occur only in the subcutaneous fat layer. Regular exercise and well balanced diets do not always reverse or prevent its formation, although an unhealthy lifestyle will make the overall appearance worse over time due to poor nutrition, weight gain and lack of sufficient water intake.

Furthermore with age there is a loss of tone of connective tissue and thickness in the superficial fat layer and dermis. Noticeable flaccid cellulite is noticeable as a result.

Cellulite Treatment

On the market today there is a wide variety of products claiming the remedy cellulite. Many do not perform what they claim and as it's not known or clear which do and don't work, it is very easy to become sucked in to buying expensive mistakes.

Many products contain topical treatments which alone are ineffective in cellulite treatment. Creams containing herbs, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins are also available. Creams can help the skin become softer, smoother and healthier so it can repair itself easier.

Cellulite cream which contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatories are more efficient when treating cellulite as the flow of blood is stimulated. Cellulite affected areas are usually need extra moisture, increased blood supply and protection as they are dry and damaged. The appearance of cellulite can be reduced temporarily by increasing moisture to the affected area.

You must remember that cellulite can be treated from both the inside and outside.

And of course, there are options in cosmetic surgery for removing cellulite, but that is usually a last resort - unless you're a Hollywood star!
