Causes, Treatments and Prevention of Cellulite

by Abigail McKenzee

The dimpled appearance of the skin that some people have on their hips, thighs and buttocks is referred to a cellulite. Cellulite is much more common in women than in men due to the differences in the way that connective, fat and muscle tissue are distributed in men and women. The lumpiness of cellulite is caused by fat deposits that push and distort the connective tissues beneath skin, leading to the characteristic changes in appearance of the skin.

Cellulite is not related to the condition known as cellulitis, which is a spreading bacterial infection of the skin and tissues beneath the skin.

Causes of Cellulite

The dimpled appearance of cellulite can be considered to be a normal occurrence to many normal human beings. Factors such as heredity, skin thickness, gender, the amount and distribution of body fat, and age all influence the extent to whether cellulite appears. Men can also be affected although it is more common in women. Although female hormones may play a role in contributing to this pattern of fat distribution, cellulite is not treatable by hormone therapy.

Cellulite Reduction Most people dislike the appearance of cellulite and prefer to have skin as smooth as they possibly can. Thus much has been written about cellulite, and many treatments such as dietary changes to creams and mechanical treatments. Some of these therapies include:

Massage treatments: There are some machines that massage cellulite affected areas. One such is Endermologie has been approved by the U.S. FDA for temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. While a temporary decrease in the appearance of cellulite may result, the technique appears to redistribute fat rather than permanently alter its configuration under the skin. Frequent maintenance cellulite treatments are required after the initial result has been achieved or the appearance of cellulite will come back.

Laser or light therapy: Two light therapy devices have been approved by the FDA, that approve suction or massage with light therapy also to reduce cellulite. Similar to Endermologie, both treatments require multiple sessions of treatment and maintenance treatments to keep up the improved appearance. Laser/massage treatments are even more costly than massage treatments as the complete program generally costs thousands of dollars.

One treatment not recommended is liposuction. This technique of extracting fat by vacuuming it from under the skin is not effective for cellulite. In fact, liposuction may worsen the appearance of the skin by sucking out the cushion of fat that resides just under the skin. Additional dimpling of the skin results.

What can be done about cellulite?

In conclusion keeping muscles toned through regular exercise and eating a healthy diet are the best approaches to keeping the body smooth. Be cautious before trying elaborate procedures such as surgical techniques. It is important to remember that although they are FDA approved massage and combined laser/massage therapies, are costly and time-consuming treatments are approved only for the temporary decrease in the appearance of cellulite and require ongoing treatments to maintain any. A cellulite cream is usually a more economical and more effective option.
